The story of how I found my passion in sugar, flour, eggs and icing
Hi. I’m Kerry and this how my cake journey started.
When I was 21, my life took an unexpected turn following a tragic event. I needed to find something to help me get through this. So my Auntie Audrey took me under her wing and taught me to make sugar flowers. From that day, I was hooked. I loved it and even made a few wedding cakes for friends - but only as a hobby.
Over the next few years, I got married and had three lovely children. When I mentioned to a friend that I used to enjoy cake making, she suggested that I try out the evening classes at Bournemouth college. Here, I was taught royal icing and was, once again, hooked and wanted to learn more.
So, in 2009 I went back to college and became a student for a year to learn the art of cake decorating using royal icing, sugar paste and sugar flowers. The following year, I qualified with distinction and decided to launch Kerry’s Cakes. And I’ve never looked back.
The lovely Dawn Pennington, who was my tutor at college, started her own cake school and so I kept my hand in by regularly taking courses there. And in due course, she asked me to join her team - so I now teach sugar flowers and carved cakes at the school. I really enjoy sharing my passion with the wonderful students there.
As the years have gone by, my business has flourished. I now have a purpose-built cake studio in the garden, where I can talk to lovely couples about their wedding cake and they can see examples of my work, when they come for consultations.
My love for cake decorating comes with lots of inspiration from holidays, days out and walking around gardens, where I am regularly to be found inspecting flowers and working out how I could make these out of sugar.
Apart from cake making, I also enjoy going to the theatre, walks on the beach with the dog and spending quality time with my husband and children.
Family is everything to me.
Kerry xx
